Magazine brought to life: INCONCEPT Live Magazine

November 16, 2014 | Lifestyle | 0 comments

Reading a magazine. Been there done that. Still doing it when it’s an interesting magazine. But what about a magazine that you can experience live? Never been there and never done that. So it was time to try. Last Thursday was the grand opening of a new pop-up store in Rotterdam: INCONCEPT Live Magazine. As a blogger, I was invited to this event to experience this new pop-up store.
Let’s start with some background information. INCONCEPT Live Magazine is founded by Evana Kuik. Evana Kuik is a designer and has her own label: EVAN Menswear. Her idea was to create a live platform for upcoming creative designers and artists, where they can work on new concepts and designs and show their unique products to the public. INCONCEPT aims to be a platform for national and international talents. Just like a magazine has various categories, INCONCEPT offers various live categories: fashion, food, (interior) …

Songs of the week: Lovely Old Hollywood music flava

August 30, 2014 | Golden oldies | 0 comments

You know those songs that you heard for the first time and are on your repeat button ever since? That list will be growing today. It’s been a while, but finally it’s time for another episode of “Songs of the week”. In previous episodes, I have showed you some of my favorite jazz, soul and funk songs. Today I want to shine some light on some lovely Old Hollywood music masterpieces of the golden era. The songs below are on my Youtube repeat button since the first time I discovered them during my Old Hollywood movie nights.
Why?
Well first of all you will see that some of the songs are mimed and not really sung by the actresses mentioned below. Still I believe that they “own” the song, because of their acting, appearance and charisma. Besides that, these songs are pretty good! The writing of this post was actually delayed because of me, selecting …

Songs of the week: Keep it funky

October 8, 2013 | Golden oldies | 0 comments

Back in the business with another episode of “Songs of the week”. This week those energetic funk classics are on my repeat button. Funk of today has developed a lot since the old days. James Brown played a great part in the development of funk. Funk also lies at the base of the popular disco music style of the 1970s. “Everybody was kung-fu-fightinggggg”…remember that one? Sounds like disco, dances like disco, smells like disco…But no, it wasn’t 100% pure disco.
In the 1970s jazzmusicians began to experiment with funk, which led to jazzfunk. In the 1980s there was like a massive chain reaction against the “overkill” of disco music of the 1970s. The synthesizer was introduced and made a statement in several music genres, including funk. Ofcourse the 1980s and funk have to be mentioned in one sentence with Prince, who took funk to another level. After the 1980s, funk blended …

Songs of the week: Put on your soulful dancing shoes

July 27, 2013 | Golden oldies | 0 comments

…and get into groove!
As you’ll discover in these blogposts: My taste in music is very various and logically my ipod can not be stereotyped in a certain music category: from rock to alternative, pop to latin, dance/house to soul and reggae with a little bit of funk and jazz. It’s all there!
Today I’m into the old soul classics mood. These oldskool soul classics will instantly put you in a dance mood and lift your spirit.
When it comes to soul, I’m definitely an old soul lover. And I’m talking about way back, like the 1950s and 1960s. The songs that we’re made when I wasn’t even born, but which will definitely fall into the never skip-and never-erase-of-your-ipod category. They don’t make them like this anymore…
Enjoy your soulful saturday!

Songs of the week: Musical masterpieces that move your soul

July 13, 2013 | Golden oldies, Music | 0 comments

Nostalgia is probably my middle name when it comes to fashion and movies. But let’s not forget the music!
Songs can be divided in different categories.:
…You’ve got songs that are pretty nice to listen to for a few months.
…Songs that bring back childhood memories.
…Songs on your ipod that you always skip, but never delete.
…Song on your ipod that you never skip and never delete.
…Songs that make you move (on the street, on the dancefloor…It doesn’t matter. Your feet won’t escape the beat).
…And of course: songs that make your soul move (with or without vocals).
Today a picked two songs from the last category. So here’s an ode to those musical masterpieces where no words are needed. The music speaks for itself. And since the Port of Rotterdam North Sea Jazz festival takes place in The Netherlands this weekend, I’m a little bit in the jazzy masterpiece mood:
Candy Dulfer and Dave Stewart – …
