For a retrospective (fictive) peek at the 1960s, we had Mad Men. For the 1950s (and a small part of the 1960s), we have Velvet, also knowns as Galerías Velvet. As you may have read, when I finished the Spanish serie Gran Hotel, I was happy that there was yet another Spanish retro serie waiting for me: Velvet. A serie that is set in the late 1950s in Spain, with a serious ode to high class fashion of those days. Last week, I came back from my holiday and I couldn’t wait to watch the last two seasons. Season 3 and 4 were added to Netflix (Netherlands) on the 1st of August and I finished the final episode on the 5th of August. Yes, that’s how addictive this serie is. I’ve set my own personal binge-watch record, although now I regret that I didn’t spread my binge-watch pleasure over a …
Yesterday was definitely not a lazy Sunday. With a friend, I went Back to the fifties.. Sunny weather, good company and a fifties environment. Just a few ingredients for a lovely vintage meets present Sunday.
So this Back to the fifties festival was in the centre of Roosendaal (Netherlands). It was not very nearby and I’ve never been in Roosendaal except for a transfer to another track in the railway station. So my friend and I felt like tourists in our own country. Tourists in a temporary time machine. Rewind to the 1950s and stay there, at least for a few hours.
Mid-fifties. James Dean. Rebel without a cause. A few ingredients that inspired a whole new generation of teens to “rebel” back in the 1950s. It was also the start of some new trends in fashion style. Short jackets and jeans with rolled cuffs for men. Figurehugging tops and tight (highwaisted) pants and skirts for women. Let’s not forget the famous pompadour hairstyles! James Dean was an important cult icon of the new rockabilly (sub) culture. Greasers (indeed, like John Travolta in Grease) and Dolls with that o so typical rockabilly style.
It’s that time of the year again. The time when a certain someone will tell you a little story about how he gave his heart away last Christmas (will he ever learn?) and someone else only wants you for Christmas, which is nice but she told you that so many times. You should know that by now.
Yes, it’s December again and the most wonderful time of the year is coming soon. In my perception, Christmas is also the most nostalgic time of the year. We watch (old) movies with our family and friends and bring up memories. 90s kids who always watch Home Alone as a Christmas tradition, raise your hands! Also, we love to listen to listen to the (Dutch) top 2000 songs of all time. With a lot of classic hits and memories. Nostalgia all around.
Yesterday, I had a little rendez-vous with the 1950s again. I watched an episode of the I love Lucy show and it was hilarious. The I love Lucy show is a sitcom of the 50s starring Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. The comedy serie is about Lucy Ricardo and her husband Ricky Ricardo. In every episode you can get a 25 minute peek in their marriage and (fictional) life. Thanks to our social media platform nowadays, that’s 25 minutes per episode – without ads. Thank you Youtube. Once again you make it possible to watch one (or two) season(s) in one night.
