Oriental Spice and some Chocolate

I’ve been in the 90s mood lately. It all started with binge-watch sessions of Full House. After that I went for 90s binge-listen sessions on Spotify. So I was listening to this song – I know how 90s eurohouse can it get – and my mind wandered away and stopped at the personal branding station. Be somebody is a good motto. Be yourself is even better. Not for the world, but especially for yourself. And branding who you are will add value to your life. I remember when I was a little girl…

Personal branding: Then and Now

I was the one with the two braids or long hair who loved to write stories. Nowadays I am the modern vintage lady with one braid or long hair who usually wears red lipstick. The one who loves vintage & retro, but also social media and other modern technological developments. Or the one who has her own vision about various aspects of life and is not afraid to share it.

Or that independent person who doesn’t do things in ‘regular order’. The list goes on and on. As I grew older after my teen years, I knew what I wanted and more importantly: what I definitely didn’t want. And it shows. Literally. When you know who you are and what you want, showing it happens naturally. It’s personal branding, sometimes even without consciously promoting who you are.

So how does personal branding help you in life?

1. It separates the wheat from the chaff
I put this one first with reason. We love to be surrounded by people. But it’s the quality of those people that is important. When you show who you are, in appearance and character, you’re already using personal branding. With that, you attract certain people who like to be in your neighborhood and who usually like to stay. Whether it’s at work or in your personal life. It doesn’t mean they are the same as you.

On the contrary. And that is exactly what you want in your inner circle. People who give you positive vibes and embrace & cheer on who you are. Of course, you also have the people who are not very enthusiastic about whatever you stand for and the best part is that you will know it immediately. And there you have it: effortlessly separating the wheat from the chaff.

2. It can be a crucial factor in a professional environment
Separating the wheat from the chaff also applies to your career. You try something and you know: This is it. Or not. That’s not the only aspect. Think about job interviews. Standing out is more important than ever these days. What better way to do it than advertise what you truly stand for. Maybe you have a special hobby, an unique vision on life or career. It can all make THE difference.

In my case, my passion for blogging and modern vintage lifestyle truly has made the difference in getting the job(s). But if I didn’t brand it through my appearance or just by saying it out loud, who would know?

3. It helps you to find or develop your passion(s).
When you’re busy with being yourself, you’re constantly busy with what you stand for on different levels. What do you like, what do you want and of course: what truly makes you happy? It also means that you can have doubts about where you are at the moment… On the other hand, it gives you motivation and ambition to pursue or start that hobby, passion or new career.

Years ago, I knew that I wanted to do something with writing. And here I am writing this blog and using my writing skills in a professional environment. Even more years ago, I already knew I loved oldies (music and movies). And here I am applying modern vintage lifestyle, writing about it and meeting lovely people who end up in my inner circle.

Either way, personal branding helps you to get more out of your life and the best part: all you have to do is emphasize who you are and what you stand for. Being yourself doesn’t cost a thing.

Love this post! People don’t always understand how personal branding can be interesting for everyone, not just bloggers or vloggers. You perfectly explained that in this article!
