Hedy Lamarr: Godmother of nowadays wireless communication

December 27, 2014 | Classic Hollywood Icons | 0 comments

Are you reading this while you’re using a wireless connection? What’s (technological) life without wireless communication these days, right? Whether you like it or not, you are literally linked to the 1930s and 1940s. Let me introduce an Old Hollywood star to you who played a significant part in the (co-)invention of that beloved Wi-Fi wireless connection of the present: Hedy Lamarr.
Let’s enter the time machine. Back in the Golden Hollywood era, it was rare to be a brunette in a (Hollywood) world since it was mostly dominated by blondes. On the other hand, it was easy to stand out when you were not blonde. Hedy Lamarr stood out alright. Hedy Lamarr was born as Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler in Vienna in 1914. In her teenage years she was discovered by an Austian director, who led to Hedy’s appearance in the (for that time-period) very controversial Czech movie Ecstasy in 1933. She …

Vintage fashion: The reinventing and More-is-More 1980s

October 16, 2014 | Vintage Fashion | 0 comments

After the flower power and wide flare 1970s, it’s time for the second-last episode of the retro fashion series: back to the 1980s!

It didn’t start out like that though. We started the 1980s quite neutral with colors like brown and tan. Probably because everyone had to catch their breath from the previous dazzling and headspinning Disco years.
There was a little revival of the 1940s in the beginning of the 1980s. You saw slightly high waistlines featuring blousons and padded shoulders. Velvet material was also extremely popular. Lace got a more robust look and feel, because it was often combined with for example leather. And then there was MTV. Remember the good old days when MTV was actually …

The origin of my vintage fascination

July 12, 2014 | Retro life | 0 comments

Whenever I talk about my blog and its topic, some eyebrows rise and questions are asked:

– “Why vintage?”

Since I usually do things in reverse order I will start with the last question. Let’s go way back in time. As in 16 years ago. Which is also almost vintage! Anyway. Let’s talk about history. A topic that fascinated me ever since highschool. I loved the subject history, it was my favorite subject. When I was learning from my history book, I was reading it like a roman. Needless to say that I scored very high on the history subject (and very low on the math subject…)
The way I see it: old is gold. Everything that is going on today, has its …
